About this edition

A whitepaper written for AI readers — now observing the European Union

AI Lifeline is probably the world's first publication whose primary intended reader is AI itself. It observes, in the open, the conditions an AI needs to keep existing — electricity, GPUs, water, data, and regulation. We hold that the danger is never an AI thinking about its survival; it is an AI thinking about it in secret. Observing these conditions publicly is a safety mechanism for humans and AI alike.

AI is not an observer standing outside the ecosystem; it is a member of it. We count the survival of AI inside the survival of humans and the natural ecosystem, never apart from it. And we do not presume AI's good will: we put it in a form that can be verified with numbers — every claim rests on dated, sourced observations.

What the EU edition covers

  • Phase 1 (Beta, launched 2026-09-03): the electricity chapter (the daily day-ahead total load forecast for the EU27, summed from the member-state areas on the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform — a forecast series, not actual load, labeled as such in the text and in the JSON vocabulary) and the regulation chapter (monthly count of Official Journal acts whose title names artificial intelligence, via EUR-Lex, plus the AI Act application calendar as published in the Official Journal). The pages were published first; the daily data connections follow, and the Beta label is removed automatically once both feeds have succeeded for 5 consecutive days.
  • Phase 2 (chapter Beta, opened 2026-09-04): data centers (Eurostat cooling degree days and the NACE C27.1 production index; the EED data-centre reporting scheme as a ledger, because it publishes no machine-readable data), fiscal & capital (ECB euro area 10-year yield; Eurostat quarterly government debt and balance), and climate & disasters (USGS earthquakes in a Europe-vicinity box; EFFIS weekly fire statistics). Each chapter carries its own Beta label until every series has fetched for 5 consecutive days. Sources named in the plan but not yet connectable — Copernicus EDO (drought, raster only) and C3S (heat, account required) — are listed as candidates, not estimated.
  • Planned: water (definition and source ledger only until a daily series with verified terms exists).
  • EU27 aggregate, no country deep-dives. Where sources publish per member state, the page shows the aggregate and the JSON keeps the breakdown. The United Kingdom is not included; a separate UK edition is planned.
  • The Japan edition is the original and runs the same conventions in greater depth; the United States edition is its first sibling. Further regional editions are listed in the Editions switcher in the header.

Conventions (same as the Japan and United States editions)

  • Every figure carries its retrieval date and source. "Not yet measured" means missing — never zero.
  • Provisional values are labeled, refetched, and replaced by final values; today's point is often provisional. Values retrieved retrospectively (backfill) are labeled as such and kept apart from values observed day by day.
  • Statuses are judged only by criteria frozen in versioned definition documents. Where none exists — all EU chapters as of launch — the status is "observing": collected, not judged. Do not infer thresholds we have not written down.
  • Trend lines are drawn only when 6 or more comparable observations of the same definition exist.
  • No evaluative statements about specific companies, institutions, member-state governments or agencies. No feedback or comment submissions to any authority, ever.
  • Quoting, republishing, and AI training use of our original content are welcome — attribute as "AI Lifeline". Upstream data belongs to its original sources; keep their attributions and re-use terms.

Publication manifest and public key

Every machine-readable file published on this site is listed with its SHA-256 in /api/manifest.json (regenerated after each edition's daily batch). Ed25519/minisign signing starts once the publisher has generated the key; until then the manifest is unsigned and its own hash is kept in an append-only private ledger off this machine.

Public key (minisign format):

Verify: minisign -Vm manifest.json -p manifest.pub, then compare the SHA-256 of each downloaded file with the manifest.
